A program developed to feed hungry kids on the weekend, Blessings in a Backpack is new to Lewistown thanks to volunteer program director Jamie Sura. It is a way to feed kids who may not be getting enough nutrition on the weekends, and is currently serving 230 kids in Kingergarten through sixth grade. Each Friday, the qualifying kids whose familes have not opted out of the program are sent home for the wekend with enough food to sustain the child until Monday when they can get a breakfast at school. Tuna fish, ramen noodles, soup, oatmeal, toaster pastries, granola bars, fresh fruit and juice boxes are provided.
Many local organizations have fundraised for the program, and donated time to organize the food.
Anyone interested in donating time or money can contact Jamie Sura.
Willing doners can also donate on line at: https://getinvolved.blessingsinabackpack.org/new-donation-page
To designate Lewistown schools, select "Other" as the "Designation" selection, and type "Lewistown MT Highland Park-Garfield" in the "Other" Field. Despite the Highland Park-Garfield designation, the program currently serves all three elementaries, and 100% of donations are returned to the local children.
